A comic satire on farmer suicides will be India's entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. Debutante director Anusha Rizvi's 'Peepli Live' was selected by a Film Federation of India (FFI) committee in Chennai on Friday. "This movie was chosen because it depicts the stark reality about farmers in India but deals with it in a light-hearted manner," said FFI president L Suresh, adding that 'Angaadi Theru' — a Tamil blockbuster that completed 100 days in most theatres it was screened at — was a close competitor for top spot.

Producer Aamir Khan is a happy man. "I'm really thrilled that my fourth film is going to the Oscars," said Khan, who is in London for the premier of 'Peepli Live'. The movie has already travelled to festivals like Sundance, where it won Rizvi the best debutante director award. It was also judged the Best First Feature film at the Durban film festival.

Previously, Khan's 'Lagaan', 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Taare Zameen Par' have been chosen as India's official selection for the Oscars. Of these, only 'Lagaan' made it to the shortlist. "You have to realise there are more than 60 entries in this category and about 600 committee members who select the final five," says Khan, adding, "What I have taken away from my experience at the Oscars is that ultimately it is the movie that matters."

Dabangg surely lives up to its name and has had a "fearless" run at the box office on its opening day with net collections of approximately Rs 145 million (Rs 14.50 crore), thus beating 3 Idiots' opening day collections of Rs 130 million (Rs 13 crore).

Going by the euphoria surrounding Salman Khan, who is being touted as Bollywood's Rajnikant after Dabangg, the opening weekend collections of the movie should be in the range of Rs 430 - 450 million (Rs 43- 45 crore) and will beat 3 Idiots' Rs 380 million (Rs 38 crore) opening weekend record.

It's that time of year again. Ace photographer Atul Kasbekar is in the process of conceptualising the eighth edition of the eagerly-awaited Kingfisher Calendar for 2011 and once again, he's offering a newbie to feature alongside seasoned models in sizzling bikinis at exotic beach locales.

Toward this end Kasbekar has held three auditions in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai to find the next Kingfisher bikini bombshell and the response has been overwhelming. Why? Because celebrities like Katrina Kaif, Yana Gupta and supermodel Ujjwala Raut have all graced the calendar's pages in recent years. As Kasbekar himself put it in an interview with rediff last year, "Perceptions are changing. Today, all models and those who want to join the modelling industry are seasoned about baring their bodies."

Once the 12 finalists have been short-listed, they will be flown to Goa for the final rounds of the selection process, which will be telecast on NDTV Good Times from October 11 onwards.
